Interview with Sheila from Terrabella
1. When did you start creating or felt inspired to do so?
In 1998, I began my jewelry creations under the wings
of my mentor, my maternal grandmother who offered
me space in her store to display and sell my creations.
She has been a jeweler for over 30 years and I was
fascinated by the entire process of designing and
creating wearable pieces of art. My mother is an
interior designer and she too creates what I call
masterpieces, completely different style than mine.
The three of us combined represent different
generations and styles, and we love to complement
and critique each other in most aspects of our lives.
2. How do you start your designs or what sparks
your artistic ideas?
My natural surroundings. A flower, location, an event
or a unique raw material that I come across will inspire
me. "Terrabella" means "beautiful land" and perfectly
describes the setting in which I live. Our country has
many different natural resources in the different regions.
We have volcanoes, fresh water lakes and lagoons,
beaches in the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean,
mountains, and rivers.
3. What do you love about creating things with your
own hands?
I am a do it yourselfer in every aspect of my life.
Using my hands to me represents the gratification
and and ability to accomplish ANY task
(except changing a tire). I am very versatile
and down to earth.
4. What lessons do you want to share with others?
Do what you love...I believe if you allow your own
feelings and inspirations to lead you, that in it will
provide pieces that reflect your personality rather
than always focus or concentrate on what others
are doing. Persistence is perfection...If you don't
love it or feel something is "missing", keep at it,
and do not conform. Persistence of finding
perfection will bring perfection. Beauty is in
the eye of the beholder...Don't let others
opinions ever bring you down or question
if your work is worthy. Different people
have different tastes and you will never
please all of these people. Therefore, create
what you love - there will always be a
market, it's just a matter of finding it.
